Iris versicolor (Iridaceae) - Blue Flag and other irises have been used by Native Americans and other cultures for medicines, food, perfume ("orris root"), and dyes. There is also a yellow version, called "yellow flag". Since it is becoming less common because its habitat is often drained or filled for building purposes, it is best not to pick it. It is available from some plant nurseries, however. It likes a moist habitat, and can be grown in wet or marshy places in the garden. Blue Flag blooms in late spring to early summer.
