Sanguinaria canadensis (Papaveraceae Papaveroideae) -- These members of the poppy family get their name from the juice they exude when broken, which is a bright orange to red color. Bloodroot has many uses: it produces a dye (various red tones), it has been used to treat skin cancers and warts, and it is used commercially in toothpaste and mouth wash to fight plaque. It shouldn't be ingested, however, as it is toxic. Bloodroot blooms in early spring. (Photographed in PA)
