Lobelia cardinalis (Campanulaceae) - A member of the bluebell family, this plant is also known as red lobelia. The name "cardinal flower" refers to the scarlet robes worn by the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. I was only able to find it at Bowman's Wildflower Farm (a nature preserve). Its stunning appearance has led to it being over-picked and harvested in the wild. It likes a moist habitat, and blooms in mid summer. (Photographed in PA)
