Trifolium pratense (Leguminosae) - This relative of peas and beans is originally from Europe. In the U.S.A. it is farmed as a food for livestock and to add nitrogen to the soil, but in many cultures (including China) humans also enjoy eating it. Clover is full of vitamins, and recent research shows evidence of medicinal value as well. All the edible wild plant books recommend tea made from the fresh blossoms (no brown bits), although I have never done this...Blooms in summer. (Photographed in WI)

Trifolium repens (Leguminosae) - White clover is best known for its nectar, which makes excellent honey. It shares many of the virtues of red clover (see above), and also has a history of medicinal use...The clover leaf is also the model for the club suit on playing cards. Blooms in summer.
