Cypripedium
calceolus
(Orchidaceae)-- One of many north american orchids. It has been used in the past as a
sedative, thus another name for it is "American Valerian". It was over-harvested and is uncommon now,
and therefore should not be picked or harvested. It smells great, and blooms in the late spring.
(Photographed in WI)
Note -- Orchids provoke such fascination that many people are tempted to try to transplant them
to their gardens at home. It is my opinion that this is a really BAD idea. CLICK HERE to find out why.
