Leourus cardiaca (Labiatae) - This member of the mint family gets both its common and latin names from its uses as a medicine. Some studies have shown it to have a mildly sedative effect and possibly reduce blood pressure. It also contains chemicals that promote uterine contractions and menstruation, and has been used during childbearing. Obviously pregnant women shouldn't use it, and people with high blood pressure should talk to a doctor before taking it. Blooms early to mid-summer. (Photographed in WI)
