Symplocarpus foetidus (Araceae) -- This member of the arum family is cousin to "Jack-in-the-Pulpit". Like "Jack", it is edible but I have never tried it for two reasons. The first is that it can be mistaken for "False Hellebore", which is poisonous. The second is that it contains calcium oxalate crystals. This chemical will burn your mouth unless the plant is completely dried (No form of cooking eliminates it, only drying)... Skunk cabbage flowers are a mix of red, brown, and green - the ones shown are on the redder side of the norm. This was the first thing I saw blooming in '98 (during a warm spell in early Febuary!).
