Viola sororia -- I'm out on a limb here with the Identification, because while I'm sure it's a violet, there are over 75 species in North America alone, with very fine distinctions...The aroma of a relative (viola odorata) is used as a perfume, but temporarily dulls the sense of smell. This could account for it's popularity before the advent of regular bathing... Violets were Napolean's favorite flower, The symbol of ancient Athens, and are Wisconsin's State flower. Bloom in spring. (Photographed in WI)
